How to Run Local Google Ads (Without Draining Your Bank Account)

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Most local businesses donate 50% of their budget to Google by using “Default Settings.”

If you are a Dentist, Plumber, or Local Store, you don’t need clicks from the next state over. You need neighbors.

Here is the exact setup to dominate your Local Area (Maps + Search).

1. The “Secret” to Ranking on Google Maps Ads

You know those ads that appear at the very top of the Google Maps list?

You can’t buy those directly. You have to “Link” them.

  • The Setup: Go to Tools > Data Manager inside Google Ads.
  • Action: Link your Google Business Profile (GMB) to your Ad Account.
  • The Result: This enables “Location Assets. Now, your ad can show your address, distance, and even appear directly inside the Google Maps app when locals search for you.

2. The “Budget Saver” Setting (Crucial!)

By default, Google sets your location targeting to: “People in, or showing interest in, your location.”

This is a trap. It means someone in Delhi searching for “Best Pizza” might see your Hyderabad Pizza ad just because they looked at Hyderabad photos yesterday.

Change this immediately:

  • Go to Campaign Settings > Location Options.
  • Select: “Presence: People in or regularly in your included locations.”
  • Why? This ensures you ONLY pay for clicks from people physically near your store.

3. Uncheck the “Search Network” 📉

When creating a Search Campaign, Google quietly checks a box called “Include Google Search Partners” or “Display Network.”

4. Optimize Your GMB (Your Landing Page for Maps)

Your Google Business Profile is essentially your “Second Website.” If you are running ads to it, it needs to look alive.

  • Upload the Menu/Services: Don’t make people guess what you sell.
  • Add Recent Photos: Posters, Offer flyers, or “Team at work” photos.
  • Offers: Use the “Update” feature to list any active discounts.
  • Served Areas: Ensure your GMB “Service Areas” match your Ad Radius. Don’t list 50km away if you only serve 5km.

5. The Sweet Spot Budget 💰

You don’t need millions to start locally.

  • Recommended Start: $20 USD or ₹1,500 INR per day.
  • This is enough data to get 5-10 quality clicks/calls daily without burning cash while you optimize.
